Job description

Morningside University invites applications for the Esther Mackintosh Humanities Scholar of the University. This new endowed professorship offers a rare opportunity for a scholar to promote and celebrate humanistic inquiry on campus and in the community. Housed in the interdisciplinary Humanities department, this is a 9-month, tenured, faculty position at the rank of associate or full professor to begin in August of 2023.

Morningside University is a private, four-year liberal arts university affiliated with the United Methodist Church, located on a beautiful 68-acre campus located in a residential area in Sioux City, Iowa. Morningside is a small, collegial, and mission driven community, dedicated to the integration of liberal arts and professional study. Offering more than https://www.morningside.edu/academics/, with a 13:1 student:faculty ratio, the University highly values excellence in teaching and learning. Morningside is recognized for providing undergraduate students with exceptional active learning, and for its online graduate programs, flexible post-baccalaureate programs, and an online bachelor's degree completion option. Total enrollment is approximately 2,400 students from nearly all 50 states and almost 20 countries. See https://www.morningside.edu/ for more information.

Although part of the humanities department, in order to provide the freedom and support to be successful in the scholar's distinctive charge, the Scholar will report directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and receive a separate budget for professional development and community engagement activities. The Scholar must be a dynamic and creative teacher and scholar with a record of accomplishment in the humanities who possesses a doctoral or other terminal degree and the academic credentials suitable for an appointment at the level of associate/full professor. The university is interested in candidates from disciplines and scholarly fields or with areas of expertise that will add to, enhance and/or expand the current research and teaching expertise present at Morningside; and who seek colleagues who creatively apply humanistic thinking in new ways.  (For example, the Humanities department in conjunction with the Agricultural and Food Studies department recently received a $143,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities' Connections program to establish an Agricultural Humanities minor.) In addition, the Scholar will be actively involved at the local, regional and national levels in promoting the role of humanistic inquiry to our understanding of contemporary issues; and in enriching the student experience through this outreach.

This is an exciting opportunity for a humanities scholar who is passionate about the importance of the humanities to higher education and to our society.
