The department of philosophy is searching for multiple full-time, tenure-track assistant/associate/full professors of philosophy. We are seeking professors engaged in either (1) the emerging field of Philosophy and AI (including especially the social, ethical, and political dimensions of technology and its use) and/or (2) Value Theory (which may include normative ethics, applied ethics, social, legal, and political philosophy, moral psychology, and/or meta-ethics) and who can contribute to the department’s expansions in these areas, including their interconnections.

AOS: (1) Philosophy and AI and/or (2) Value Theory. AOC: Open. Preference for philosophy of language, philosophy of cognitive science, ancient philosophy, history of modern philosophy, and Kantian metaphysics and epistemology.

The Illinois College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is a world leader in research, teaching, and public engagement. Faculty in the College create knowledge, address critical societal needs through the transfer and application of knowledge, and prepare students for lives of impact in the state, nation, and world. To meet these objectives, the College embraces and values diversity and difference through hiring faculty candidates who can contribute through their research, teaching, and/or service to the diversity and excellence of the Illinois community.

Successful candidates in Philosophy and AI will be expected to contribute to the new Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Philosophy, seated in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This program maintains strong connections to the University of Illinois’s Computer Science Department, seated in the Grainger School of Engineering. For more information on this new program, see: https://cs.illinois.edu/academics/undergraduate/degree-program-options/cs-x-degree-programs/computer-science-philosophy. Successful candidates in Value Theory will be expected to interact with neighboring departments, as appropriate to their subject matters, which may include fields such as law, psychology, political science, history, economics, or fine arts.

Target start date: August 16, 2023. Qualifications: Ph.D in philosophy or a related discipline, appropriate background in AOS and AOC, and evidence of ability to contribute significantly to the department and discipline through research, teaching, service, and public engagement.

Candidates whose Ph.D may be delayed but who will complete all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of Instructor.  After the Ph.D requirement is met, the appointment will be changed to Assistant Professor.

Duties: normally, two courses per semester (one introductory or intermediate and one advanced); independent study and thesis supervision; the establishment and maintenance of an active and independent research program; committee assignments; and related service, leadership and public engagement activities as needed.

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
