CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The LOGOS Research Group in Analytic Philosophy, based at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Barcelona, offers one two-year full-time postdoctoral position in epistemology.

Officially recognized as a consolidated research group by the Catalan government since 2001, LOGOS is one of the most successful research groups in analytic philosophy in Europe. LOGOS is highly internationalized and has a track record of attracting talent, hosting research projects, organizing international research events, and placing its junior members. In the period 2017-21 alone, its members published over 120 journal articles in Q1-journals and managed more than six million Euros in competitive research funds. For more information, please consult www.ub.edu/grc_logos/index.php.

The two-year postdoctoral position is financed by research funds awarded to the group’s coordinator and managed by the University of Barcelona’s Fundació Bosch i Gimpera (www.fbg.ub.edu). The gross salary is €36,000 per annum.

Candidates might work in any area of contemporary epistemology but should have some background knowledge in the field of epistemic logic and also be able and willing to connect whatever formal work they do (if any) with issues of concern to general epistemology. The successful candidate is expected to move to Barcelona, to join LOGOS for the time of their appointment, and to actively participate in the group’s regular research activities throughout that period. This notably includes participation in the LOGOS Epistemology Reading Group.

The successful candidate is also expected to attend and participate in workshops organized by the LOGOS-based research project on epistemic methods, financed by the Spanish government (for further details, see www.ub.edu/grc_logos/project_card.php?idProj=100).

The advertised position is a research position. That said, the successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to teaching in one of the local (English language) philosophy master programmes.

The exact start date is flexible, except that the successful candidate is expected to take up the position no earlier than 1 February, 2023, and no later than 1 October, 2023.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates from any country can apply, including non-EU countries. The call is open to both first year postdocs and more seasoned postdocs. The following eligibility criteria apply:

  • completed PhD in epistemology
  • English language proficiency, in both written and spoken form.

Although this is not itself an eligibility criterion, publications are an asset.

Application material

The application package should include all of the following:

  • cover letter
  • CV (incl. list of publications, if any)
  • project proposal in the area of epistemology
  • PhD certificate
  • one publication or writing sample on issues in epistemology (in English)*
  • two letters of reference to be sent by the referees under separate cover.

*Writing samples should be self-standing and of reasonable length. Entire theses will not be accepted.

Application procedure

All application material (except the letters of reference) should be sent as a single pdf file (max. 24 MB) by email to [email protected] before the deadline.

Referees should send their letters of reference under separate cover by email to [email protected] before the deadline.

The subject header of any emails related to this call, and the file names of any of their attachments, should include the reference ‘LOGOS POSTDOC CALL 2022’ and the name of the applicant.

The selection committee strongly encourages applications by female candidates and members of ethnic minorities.

Selection procedure

All complete and timely applications by applicants meeting the eligibility criteria will be reviewed by the selection committee (stage 1). The selection committee will then meet in person or online to discuss the relative merits of the applications received and draw up a shortlist (stage 2). Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview. Interviews are expected to take place in the first half of December and will be held via Zoom (stage 3). On the basis of these interviews, and the application material received, the selection committee will determine the final ranking of the shortlisted candidates and proceed to make an offer to the candidate ranked first (stage 4). If the candidate declines the offer, an offer will be made to the candidate ranked second, and so on.

The selection committee will apply the standard criteria of excellence for postdoctoral positions in philosophy. The selection committee will include international scholars from other institutions and of different genders.

The deadline for applications is 9 November, 2022, at noon (CET).

Shortlisted candidates can expect to receive an invitation to interview no later than 30

November. Interviews will be held in the first half of December.
