Job description

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Information School seeks highly qualified candidates for a tenure track position with research and teaching emphasis in the area of ethics of computing, data, and information. This position will be an academic nine-month, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level, to start in August 2023.

This position is one of three new faculty positions that are part of a cluster hire in ethics of computing, data, and information. Other units participating in the cluster are the departments of Computer Sciences and Philosophy and the Holtz Center for Science, Technology & Society. Applicants who wish to be considered for multiple cluster positions should apply separately to each. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in and ability to do collaborative, cross-disciplinary work with other cluster members on important ethical questions in computing, data, or information. Applicants should bring the following key contributions:

1. Expertise in theories and concepts key to ethics, equity, democracy, and justice in information, data, and computing. These may include, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, class, free speech, privacy, surveillance, transparency, content moderation, platform power, trust, misinformation, and human rights.
2. A record of work analyzing socio-technical systems, such as platforms and information systems, algorithms, programming or software practices, surveillance systems, etc.
3. The ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in ethics of computing, data, and information to students from a range of disciplinary and educational backgrounds, including information, computer, and data sciences.
4. The interest and ability to do collaborative, cross-disciplinary work with other cluster members on important questions of ethics, equity, and justice in computing, data, or information. Candidates should be familiar with interdisciplinary research and theory, including from Science & Technology Studies. We are especially interested in candidates whose work speaks across disciplinary boundaries of computation, qualitative and quantitative social sciences, and humanities.


Faculty responsibilities include research and publication, teaching courses, student advising (both master's and PhD), and service. The teaching load is two courses per semester. The selected candidate will conduct scholarly research resulting in publications in high-quality peer-reviewed scholarly venues, acquire external funding to support research and graduate students, and design and teach bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level courses (both online and in person). The candidate will be an affiliate of and contributor to the Holtz Center for Science for Science & Technology Studies. The candidate will be committed to service within the department, university, and profession appropriate to faculty rank.
