Job description

The Department of Arts, Languages, & Philosophy at Missouri University of Science and Technology invites applications for a tenure-track position in philosophy at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in August 2023. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate-level philosophy courses, contribute to strengthening our department's philosophy program, maintain an active research program, and fully engage in the life of our diverse, multidisciplinary department. The typical teaching load will be three three-credit courses per semester, usually taught in person, though some courses are occasionally taught online.   

The ideal candidate will be a talented scholar, an excellent teacher with proven classroom success, and a dynamic colleague eager to work as part of the committed Philosophy program team. Candidates should have an area of specialization in applied ethics or the philosophy of technology: the department is open to approaches to these topics from diverse perspectives and traditions. Candidates should be competent to teach a variety of courses in these areas, and the department has specific teaching needs in engineering ethics, business ethics, bioethics, social ethics, and environmental ethics. The flexibility to teach outside a specific specialization is important.  

Candidates should be willing to engage actively with S&T’s Center for Science, Technology, and Society, and be willing to collaborate with other departments across campus in order to pursue research or grant possibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

The minimum requirements for this position include a Ph.D. in philosophy, a record of scholarly activity, evidence of successful college-level teaching, and experience integrating current technologies into courses.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include a record of excellence in college-level teaching and scholarship.
