Job description

The Department of Philosophy of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is the biggest philosophy program in Hong Kong. It is pluralistic, with equal strengths in analytic, Asian and Continental philosophy. It has been consistently ranked as the top Philosophy Department in Asia and one of the best worldwide. Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Award (HKPFS)
The PhD fellowship is Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong. The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$27,100 (approx.. US$3,460) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,600 (approximately US$1,740) per year for each awardee for a period up to three years.


Additional Scholarship provided by the CUHK
HKPFS awardees will receive an additional scholarship provided by the CUHK called “CUHK Vice-Chancellor HKPFS Scholarship”. The scholarship offers tuition wavier to HKPFS awardees up to three years and an award of HK$40,000 (approx. US$5,130) for lodging in the first year of study and HK$20,000 in the second and third year. A conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$30,000 in total provided by the University and HK$12,000 in total provided by the Department. A tuition fee waiver for three years. The on-campus hostel fee will be waived in the first year. Guaranteed on-campus accommodation.

Applicants who are nominated to the HKPFS by CUHK but not being selected for HKPFS will be offered the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship. CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship awardees receive an award of HK$40,000 (approx. US$5,130) for lodging in the first year of study and HK$20,000 in the second and third year. A monthly stipend of HK$18,025 for three years will be provided. And a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$30,000 in total provided by the Graduate School and HK$12,000 in total provided by the Department.


Application Procedure

  1. Submit an initial application to the RGC through their on-line application system (https://cerg1.ugc.edu.hk/hkpfs/InitApplication.jsp) and obtain a HKPFS reference number by 1 December 2022 12:00 noon Hong Kong Time (or +8 hours GMT).
  2. Submit your full application through CUHK’s Online Application System for Postgraduate Programmes (https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/admissions/admissions/how-to-apply) and quote the HKPFS reference number by 1 December 2022 5:00 pm Hong Kong Time (or +8 hours GMT).


Regular Graduate Scholarships
In addition to the more competitive Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, the Philosophy Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong also provide about 10 regular scholarship for PhD students (monthly stipends at HK$ 18,025 for 12 months a year for 3 years) and Master of Philosophy students (monthly stipnds at HK$18,025 for 12 months a year for 2 years).

Applicants for Hong Kong PhD fellowships who are not selected for these fellowships are automatically considered for our regular PhD scholarships; applicants can also choose to just apply for our regular PhD scholarships.
