Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Georgia State University (GSU) in Atlanta, GA, seeks applications for a position as a Lecturer. Start date: Fall 2023. The Department is home to a thriving, internationally recognized MA program. GSU is a research university recognized for its commitment to undergraduate teaching.  Located in the cosmopolitan city of Atlanta, GSU has one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation.  We seek to recruit and retain a diverse community of scholars and we encourage applications from women and members of underrepresented groups.

Lectureships at GSU are non-tenure-track faculty positions which are indefinitely renewable and can lead to promotion to Senior Lecturer and Principal Senior Lecturer, based on excellence in teaching and appropriate service.  Typical teaching load is 4/4.  Roughly half the teaching will be an interdisciplinary undergraduate course in Biomedical Ethics that draws students from Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Philosophy. Other courses will depend on the teaching expertise of the hire and departmental and university needs.

The Department has been very successful at retaining Lecturers and promoting them to higher ranks. Lecturers are voting members of the Department, and the University fully supports their professional development.  Starting salary is expected to be $60,000 per year, depending on experience, with the possibility for additional compensation for summer teaching (10% per course).

  • Experience and interest in effectively teaching Biomedical Ethics
  • Ph.D. in Philosophy or related field at time of appointment
  • Interest in, and preparation for, effectively teaching GSU’s highly diverse student body

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some background in biomedical sciences or other relevant sciences
  • Ability to teach A.I. ethics, neuroethics, environmental ethics, philosophy of race, feminist philosophy, and/or social and political philosophy.

  • Names and contact information of at least three references (at least two of whom can speak to the candidate’s teaching abilities)

Questions should be addressed to the chair of the search committee: Andrew Jason Cohen at [email protected]. For more information about the Department, see https://philosophy.gsu.edu/.
