Job description

The Philosophy Department at Hunter College, CUNY invites applications for a Doctoral Lecturer position beginning Fall semester 2023. This position carries a 24-credit workload, which will normally involve teaching 6 courses per year, including a double-sized (maximum 80-student) section of symbolic logic each semester. This position does not involve a research commitment. Reappointment to a sixth year comes with a Certificate of Continuous Employment, the equivalent of tenure.

The successful candidate will provide evidence of their talent and experience as a logic teacher, and of their ability to teach both introductory and advanced undergraduate logic. The most important duties associated with this position will be to teach several courses that are required for Hunter’s Interdisciplinary Logic Minor, which the Philosophy Department shares with Hunter’s Math and Computer Science departments. These courses include Philosophy 275: Symbolic Logic, Philosophy 375: Advanced Symbolic Logic, and Philosophy 377: Non-Classical Logic. We hope to find a candidate who can spread their passion for logic to our students, and who will help to create and sustain a vibrant interdisciplinary logic community at Hunter College.

Aside from logic courses, the position will include opportunities to teach in other areas, at both introductory and advanced undergraduate levels. Currently we need teaching in metaphysics, philosophy of math, epistemology, philosophy of science, and history of philosophy. Although logic pedagogy is the top priority, evidence of teaching effectiveness and breadth in these and other areas will be considered a plus.

A PhD in Philosophy by the start of the Fall 2023 semester, as well prior teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness are required. The salary range for this position is $56,821–$98,309, depending on academic accomplishments and experience.

Required application materials include a letter of application describing teaching interests and experience, CV, evidence of teaching effectiveness including teaching evaluations, sample syllabi, graduate school transcript (if within 5 years of PhD), and at least three letters of recommendation. Material in the candidate’s possession should be uploaded to our job posting system through links found on: https://www.cuny.edu/employment/  (Job ID 25985).Other material, including confidential letters of recommendation, should be sent to Philosophy Logic Search Committee, [email protected] (note the underscores between 'phil', 'logic' and 'search').

For full consideration all materials should be received by January 30, 2023. Initial interviews will be held on Zoom in late February/early March, 2023. Applications from members of demographic groups who are underrepresented in philosophy are especially encouraged. The City University of New York is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action/Immigrations Reform and Control Act/Veterans/American with Disabilities Act Employer.
