Teaching Professor Philosophy 998130
  Full-Time/Regular

Xavier University is part of the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts and is strongly committed to enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. These values are central to our mission. We strive for a climate of respect and inclusiveness that welcomes and supports members from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, is committed unreservedly to open and free inquiry, and deliberately seeks out multiple perspectives.

Xavier’s urban location in Cincinnati allows faculty to work with community partners to develop engaged learning and internship opportunities. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East.

Position: The Department of Philosophy at Xavier University invites applications for a non-tenure-track Teaching Professorship, beginning in Fall 2023. The Teaching Professor position is renewable on a yearly basis, with the potential after six years for promotion to Senior Teaching Professor with a rolling two-year renewable contract. Candidates must be dedicated to undergraduate teaching.

Duties: Teaching introductory and intermediate level philosophy courses (PHIL 100: Ethics as Introduction to Philosophy and PHIL 200: Philosophical Perspectives) as well as occasional elective courses (for a description of these courses, see our departmental website).

In addition to teaching, duties include service and participation in the life of the Department and University consistent with the mission of Jesuit higher education, and professional development activities on and off campus. Teaching load is four courses per semester.

AOS/AOC: Applicants must have a broad knowledge of the history of philosophy and emphasize the close reading of primary texts.  Applicants must also demonstrate teaching competence in Bioethics or Philosophy of Religion.

Required Qualifications:  A Ph.D. in philosophy (or a closely-related discipline) is required at the time of application. An established record of teaching excellence is expected.

The successful candidate will be able to engage diverse groups of students in learning opportunities. We are strongly committed to enhancing equity, inclusion, and diversity. These values are central to our mission. Candidates who have worked with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students and who can contribute to our mission of inclusivity are encouraged to identify their experiences and interests. Xavier University is an Equal Opportunity employer.
