Job description

Position Summary:

The Department of Philosophy at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at Assistant Professor level to begin in fall of 2023. The Department is interested in candidates who can teach and have a promising research agenda exploring one of the following religious traditions– Hinduism, Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, or Islam—and also have competence in other world religions. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the languages of the religion(s) they study.

Regardless of specific research focus, we seek a generalist who can teach introductory courses on “Judaism, Christianity, and Islam” and “Asian Religions.” The ability to teach courses on other religious traditions and courses in philosophy, including the philosophy of religion, is an asset, as is the ability to develop and coordinate our Religious Studies minor. A normal course load is three courses per semester (9 credit hours). The Department is composed of dedicated teacher-scholars and seeks applications from candidates with a strong interest in teaching and engaging our students, as well as an active research agenda.

Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester, which include broad introductory courses in Religious Studies. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach upper-division courses in their area of expertise, as well as courses that meet the needs of the department. This position requires a commitment to excellence in teaching a diverse student body; scholarship; and service both within the university and the profession or community.

Required Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Philosophy, Religious Studies, or a closely related discipline. ABD candidates with evidence of a plan for successful dissertation defense before July of 2023 are welcome to apply.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, including the ability to teach and develop a wide range of Religious Studies and Philosophy classes
  • Evidence of scholarly activities and an ongoing research agenda
  • Experience with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse urban student population including (but not limited to) students of color, LBGTQIA students, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, students with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, student veterans, and English language learners
  • Evidence of expertise in languages relevant to the candidate’s research
  • Evidence of ability to coordinate a Religious Studies minor
