Job description |
The Dianoia Institute at ACU is looking for a postdoctoral researcher for the Templeton grant project Humble Knowers. Project description When you don’t know something, you should be humble about it. But what if you do know? Recent philosophical research argues that knowing entitles one to take premises for granted in reasoning. This implies that when you know, you need not be humble. This grant challenges this conclusion, exploring the propriety of humble knowers, who know a claim while remaining humble about it. The grant will explore humble knowing in application to both private decision making and public policy. The project is run by John Hawthorne and Simon Goldstein. The project leaders are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to this project. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to produce new research associated with the topic of humble knowers. The postdoctoral researchers will collaborate with the project leaders, and will organize events associated with the grant. The researchers will be based in Melbourne, Australia. Qualifications Applicants should have a PhD in philosophy by September 2023. Applicants are expected to have publications in leading journals or evidence of the ability to publish in such journals (for example, in the form of writing samples). The appointment will be research only, for one year. The position starts in September 2023. The compensation will be 71167.25 AUD. The project leaders may be able to extend the position for a second year. Application instructions If you are interested in applying, please send your CV and a writing sample as a single pdf to [email protected]. Instead of letters of recommendation, please just include a list of possible references at the end of your CV (we will only contact references for a short list). To ensure full consideration, please send your applications by February 17th, 2023. We will also consider late applications until the position is filled. |
