Job description

Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor (or Professor) in Logic to be held in the Faculty of Philosophy in association with the Sir Peter Strawson Tutorial Fellowship in Philosophy at University College, Oxford. This is a full-time position based at University College, High Street, Oxford, OX1 4BH and at the Faculty of Philosophy, Radcliffe Humanities, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG.

The appointee will be part of a lively and intellectually stimulating teaching and research community that performs to the highest international levels in research and publications, and will have access to the excellent research facilities that the University of Oxford offers. The Faculty of Philosophy in Oxford is one of the largest in the world, with an excellent reputation for the quality of its research and teaching. The appointee will be a member of both the College and the University community, and will have an active role to play in the running of the College (as a member of the Governing Body and a trustee of the College) and of the University (as a member of Congregation). College benefits include a fellows’ allowance (currently £12,787 p.a., taxable as salary), access to either residential accommodation at a discounted rate or a joint equity scheme, an academic allowance, an entertainment allowance, lunch and dinner in College, and private health insurance.

Applications for this post are welcome from well-qualified candidates with expertise in Logic. The successful candidate will have the potential to enhance the strong reputation of the Faculty of Philosophy and of the College in research, a proven record of internationally recognised research in Logic appropriate to their career stage and will be expected to provide a high standard of teaching (both undergraduate and graduate) for the Faculty and for the College. For the Faculty, the postholder will be able to offer lectures and graduate classes in Logic, will supervise graduate students (masters and doctoral students), participate in examining, and play a full and active role in Faculty administration. For the College, the postholder will teach courses in Logic and Epistemology and Metaphysics and will be expected to participate in the administration and governance of the College.

The successful candidate will have completed a doctorate in a relevant field (or submitted a completed doctoral dissertation for examination by the advertised closing date for this position), and will have evidence of distinguished research and/or research potential in Logic, a publication record of international standing, appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career, and evidence of excellence in teaching Philosophy.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon (UK time) on Monday 20 February 2023. It is anticipated that interviews will take place in March (date to be confirmed).
