Job Description Summary The Philosophy Department of Lewis University, a Catholic and Lasallian University, located 25 miles southwest of Chicago, is seeking an Assistant Professor of Philosophy for a full-time, tenure-track position beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. Duties include teaching four courses per semester (i.e. a teaching load of 4/4 per academic year), with usual non-teaching responsibilities . Responsibilities Responsible to model the University Mission through dedicated job performance, service excellence to constituencies, respectful collaboration and active support of the University’s Catholic and Lasallian mission and its commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

-Teach 24 credit hours per contract year (8 undergraduate courses)
-Provide service to the department, the college, the university, and the profession
-Maintain an active research agenda
-Advise and mentor students
-Support recruitment and retention of students
-Actively participate in the Department meetings, program assessment, and curriculum planning.

It is desirable that the successful candidate showcase some type of interest in: (A) organizing or co-organizing the Annual Philosophy on the Edge conference, (B) being involved in the Philosophy Department’s two organizations (Philosophy Club and Phi Sigma Tau: An International Honor Society in Philosophy), © putting forth innovative ideas in recruiting philosophy and philosophy of law majors and minors, (D) developing new courses and programs, and (E) working with the members of the Philosophy Department to further the enhancement of the recently established Philosophy Endowment.

All candidates must submit the following three items: (1) An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV), (2) a cover letter which describes the candidate’s teaching and research interests, suitability for the position, and interest in promoting and fostering Lewis University’s Catholic and Lasallian Mission and its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Statement, and (3) an unofficial transcript showing highest degree awarded or in progress. Special attention will be given to applicants who submit materials on or before March 13, 2023. Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Philosophy or Philosophy of Law. Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in Philosophy or Philosophy of Law by or before August 28, 2023. Candidates must be committed to teaching and research related to Latin American philosophy, philosophy of law, social/political philosophy, African American philosophy, non-western philosophy, OR history of western philosophy. Candidates must have a record of teaching excellence, an interactive and innovative teaching style, a commitment to education of a diverse student population, and to Catholic higher education, the University’s Lasallian Mission, and its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Statement. The candidate must be willing to teach in a department with a Continental orientation.   Preferred Qualifications Area of Specialization (AOS): Open, with preference given to Latin American philosophy, philosophy of law, social/political philosophy, African American philosophy, non-western philosophy, OR history of western philosophy.

Area of Competence (AOC): We have critical teaching needs in Philosophy of Law, Philosophy of Rights, and Social and Political Philosophy. We have additional needs, although less critical, in teaching Reasoning and Standardized Test-Taking (Law School Admissions Test [LSAT] Preparation), Philosophies of Asia, Africa and Native America, African-American Philosophy, Latin American Philosophy, and LGBTQ Rights and Issues.
