Job description |
The ANR-DFG Project IMMAGES (“Hosting a clause: Implications for the matrix and its guests” https://cethis.univ-tours.fr/version-francaise/projets-finances/fral-immages) invites application for a three-year PhD positions starting on Sept. 1, 2023 to be hosted in Université Côte d’Azur, Lab. Bases Corpus Langage (UMR7320, CNRS-UCA) https://bcl.cnrs.fr/, under the supervision of Friederike Moltmann. Keywords: propositional attitudes, modality, sentence meaning, propositions, clausal embedding, syntax-semantics interface The goal of the project is to contribute to our understanding of clausal complementation in attitude reports ('Joe believes that it is sowing') and modal sentences ('it is possible that it is snowing'). The interest of the project concerns the ways clausal complements differ syntactically and semantically from NP complements. The project brings together semantic and philosophical research with syntactic studies on language development, dialectological variation, and linguistic typology (focusing on Basque, French, German (and dialects of German), Greek, and Hungarian). The present position is for a student of philosophy or linguistics (or both) who wants to pursue a semantic or philosophical topic relating to syntactic constructions of clausal embedding, such as attitude reports, embedded interrogatives, and modal sentences. Payment: 1800€/months (average net salary over the three years) Support will be provided for travel expenses as well as a computer Application Requirements: Candidates should have a good background in semantics and philosophy of language and a serious interest in generative syntax. Supporting Documents: - Curriculum Vitae (CV); - Cover letter explaining the motivation, experience, research interests of the applicant, elaborating on how these fit in with the research goals of the project (1-2 pages); - The contact information for up to three referees (who may be contacted at a later stage); - One or two writing samples (Master's thesis if completed). All supporting documents for the application should be emailed electronically as a single pdf file to [email protected] |

The topic of the project is clausal complementation. The project focuses on the way clausal complementation with attitude verbs ('Joe thinks that it is snowing') and modals ('it is possible that it is snowing') differs syntactically and semantically from NP complement. The project brings together semantic and philosophical research with syntactic studies on the history of languages, dialectological variation, linguistic typology (focusing on Basque, French, German (and dialects of German), Greek, and Hungarian).
