Research Assistant Professor (EXPIRED)

The Department of Philosophy at Lingnan University is particularly interested in hiring candidates who work on philosophical and ethical issues related to AI, as well as the philosophy and ethics of risk (including catastrophic and existential). Although we will prioritize candidates working in these areas, we are also interested in researchers working on decision theory, environmental ethics (especially climate change), and the ethics of data science or other areas related to the impact of new technologies on the future of humanity.

The successful candidate is expected to (1) conduct research and submit papers to top-tier journals, (2) submit grant proposals to various funding bodies, (3) organize seminars, reading groups, workshops, or other related research activities, and (4) perform administrative duties as assigned by the Head of the Department.

The Department of Philosophy recently established the Hong Kong Catastrophic Risk Centre in January 2022, and the candidate is expected to contribute to the development of the centre.

The teaching load is normally two courses per year, according to departmental needs and mutual agreement. Teaching reductions are possible.

Applicants must have a PhD in Philosophy by the start of the appointment and a record of publications in Philosophy, preferably in leading journals. Candidates with no publications will not be considered.

The conditions of appointment will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity and incoming passage and baggage allowance for eligible appointee.

The initial contract period will be 3 years. Upon completion of the appointment period, the University may consider a further extension.
