Job description

Basic Information:

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Peking University was founded in 1912, which marks the beginning of philosophy as an academic discipline in modern China.  In 1995, the first-ever faculty of religious studies in China was launched at this same institution, and is administered together with the faculty of philosophy.

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is keen to maintain its balance in the growth of all of its sub-disciplines. It can claim abundant achievements in Chinese philosophy, Western philosophy, Marxist philosophy, religious studies, ethics, aesthetics, logic, philosophy of science, etc.. It also promotes the interdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy and other fields, with more than 10 research bodies affiliated, such as the newly established Center for Philosophy and the Future of Humanity, as well as the Peking University Berggruen Institute Research Center. The undergraduate program, while focusing on primary resources and philosophical theories, aims to inspire students to think independently within a broad horizon of the humanities. The Department has collaborated with other institutions of Peking University to establish a number of novel programs such as Philosophy, Politics and Economics, Classical Philology, and Logos and Polis. The graduate program emphasizes training in critical thinking, the close reading of philosophical texts, and diversity of research perspectives and methodologies. It subscribes to an international standard within the profession to prepare local young scholars to carry out independent research and to have their voices heard on the global stage.

The Department has been ranked No.1 in all the past national subject (philosophy) evaluations by the Chinese Ministry of Education. And Peking University has been ranked No.12 in the QS World University Rankings 2023, and No.1 in the QS Asia University Rankings 2023. In 2018, the Department hosted the 24th World Congress of Philosophy in Beijing with more than 5000 participants.
