Job description

Applications are invited for a 2-year post in bioethics and the philosophy of biomedical sciences. The successful candidate will have completed a PhD (and will hold a PhD certificate) before taking up the post.

The role holder will help support and maintain the Department's national and international reputation for excellence in teaching and research and produce work for presentation, publication, and lecturing. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the lecturing, supervising, examination, and administration of courses for both undergraduate and graduate students in the Department and should be prepared to deliver lectures and supervise written work on a broad range of topics in biomedical ethics and the philosophy of medicine. Additional teaching expertise in the domain of science and values would also be welcome. The position will start on 1 September 2023 and will include an initial 6-month probation period.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in administrative, teaching and examining at all levels. The post is focused on students at undergraduate and MPhil level, and the post holder will contribute lectures and seminars on a range of topics in the bioethics and the philosophy of biomedical sciences for both, giving up to 32 lectures per year, including up to 16 lectures for Part II courses, and leading a 4-session seminar on a 'primary source'. The post holder will also offer a lecture and follow-up seminars in their area of expertise for Part III and MPhil students; they will give at least one series of seminars for the Health, Medicine and Society (HMS) MPhil; and they will provide supervision on topics in bioethics and the philosophy of biomedical sciences. Teaching expertise in the area of science and values would also be advantageous.

The post would suit someone who wishes to develop their research experience and profile, produce, and write up work of suitable quality for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and present research findings at appropriate opportunities.
