Job description

The Executive Committee of the APA Central Division solicits applications for the position of divisional secretary-treasurer. The committee hopes to make an appointment by late spring 2023, and it is expected that there will be a transition period of approximately one year during which the appointee will work with the present secretary-treasurer, Elyse Purcell. The successful candidate would assume the role in full on July 1, 2024.

This is a part-time role that comes with an annual stipend of $20,000.

The secretary-treasurer's responsibilities include the following:

Oversight of the Division's Annual Meeting

  • Negotiating hotel contracts (in collaboration with the executive director)

  • Serving as a member of the Program Committee and providing support for the Program Committee in preparing the annual meeting program

  • Scheduling APA committee and affiliated group sessions

  • Working with APA staff and hotel staff on various aspects of the meeting

  • Preparing the agenda for the business meeting and maintaining minutes of the meeting

Support of Divisional Committees and Elections

  • Supporting the Program Committee in planning the annual meeting

  • Preparing agendas for meetings of the Executive Committee and keeping minutes of meetings

  • Supporting the Nominating Committee in securing candidates for divisional elections

  • Preparing electronic ballot materials (in collaboration with the executive director)

Oversight of Division's Finances

  • Overseeing the divisional budget

  • Monitoring the financial position of the division

Representation on Board of Officers

  • Serving as a member of the Board of Officers

  • Attending quarterly board meetings, including one annual in-person meeting normally held in November and three annual virtual meetings in February, May, and August

  • Serving as member of the Finance Committee and Committee on Divisional Coordination

Qualifications

The Executive Committee seeks these qualifications in a secretary-treasurer:

  • A strong record of achievement in philosophy

  • Evidence of successful administrative experience

  • Respect for different philosophical approaches and the ability to gain the respect of people representing different approaches to philosophy

  • The ability to work productively with a variety of people, including APA staff, hotel sales and convention staff, meeting exhibitors and sponsors, etc.

  • High proficiency with computers/technology

A candidate for the position must be a regular or emeritus member of the APA and must be an affiliate of the Central Division in order to take up the position. (Members affiliated with other divisions may change their division if selected for the position.)
