Job description

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY, UT – POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW: The Department of Philosophy seeks to hire a two-year Postdoctoral Fellow, to commence July 1, 2023. AOS: Philosophy and the environment (including but not limited to environmental ethics, philosophy of ecology, and climate ethics), or applied ethics (esp. as related to environmental issues, e.g., environmental racism, or health and the environment), or social/political philosophy (esp. climate justice). AOC: Environmental ethics. Teaching responsibilities will be one course per term (Fall and Spring semesters). Mentoring will be provided to assist the Postdoctoral Fellow’s professional development.

The Department of Philosophy has a tradition of teaching and research concerning environmental and climate issues, as well as a tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration with other units across campus engaged in related work—such as the Environmental Humanities program; the Wallace Stegner Center for Land, Resources & the Environment in the S.J. Quinney College of Law; and the Wilkes Center for Climate Science and Policy. Our ideal applicant for this postdoctoral fellowship will be one whose teaching, research, and other activities will both uphold and enhance these traditions, and help the department maintain and strengthen its relationships to other relevant units and programs. We are especially interested in applicants whose teaching and research will complement existing areas of strength in the department, which include applied ethics (esp. bioethics) and philosophy of science (esp. philosophy of biology). More information about the department’s areas of strength can be found at our website: https://philosophy.utah.edu>.

Our department values its recent recognition for equitable hiring and retention of women faculty (see: https://women-in-philosophy.org/data/faculty>) and is committed to pursuing the benefits that inclusiveness can bring to philosophical inquiry and the classroom. We enthusiastically welcome applications from candidates who have experience working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds and encouraging members of underrepresented groups to study Philosophy. Information pertaining to these issues should be included in your cover letter.

Applicants should provide a CV, cover letter, research statement, writing sample, teaching portfolio that includes evidence of teaching effectiveness, and a list of at least three references, ready to provide letters of recommendation within a week, should the search committee express interest in seeing them. Applicants must either be near completion of a PhD degree in Philosophy (or equivalent), with the thesis defense passed no later than July 1, 2023, or have had the degree awarded no earlier than July 1, 2018. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled, but complete files received by April 3 will receive priority consideration.

For questions about the position, please contact the chair of the search committee, Prof. James Tabery, at .
