Job description

The University of Kansas seeks two Visiting Assistant Professors in the Department of Philosophy to begin 8/18/2023.  These positions are full-time, academic year appointments.  One position is designated to run for two years, the other for one year.

The area of specialization of these positions is the philosophy of mind or philosophy of science, very broadly construed (to include, e.g., philosophy of psychology, cognitive science, computation, social science, etc.).  One position will be expected to teach Philosophy 150: Philosophical Communication, a course intended to introduce specific philosophical topics with an oral communication emphasis.  The other will be expected to teach Philosophy 210: Reason, Chance, and Probability, a course that introduces students to basic topics in probability and decision theory.  

The University of Kansas is located in the city of Lawrence, a thriving community 40 minutes from the Kansas City metropolitan area and 30 minutes from the state capital, Topeka. The positions will have a standard 40/40/20 allocation of effort among research, teaching, and service.

Research (40%): Establish and maintain a productive program of research within your area of specialization.

Teaching (40%): Teach two courses per semester as determined in consultation with the Department Chair.  Teaching duties will include developing syllabi, preparing and delivering lectures, creating, administering, and grading homework assignments and exams, holding regular office hours, and supervising Graduate Teaching Assistants, as appropriate.

Service (20%): Visiting faculty members are expected to participate in departmental events and actively contribute to the workings of the University community.  They are expected to perform service to the Department, College, University, and the profession at large as appropriate.

Required qualifications: a Ph.D. by the time of appointment.
