Job description

The College of Integrative Studies (CIS) and the School of Social Sciences (SOSS) at Singapore Management University, invite applications for a term-track jointly appointed Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Humanities to begin in January 2024.

The selected candidate would be expected to teach two pre-assigned courses. The first is “Critical Thinking in the Real World” as part of the Modes of Thinking basket of the Core Curriculum which is extended to all undergraduates. The course is designed as a foundational level course to introduce students to different types of reasoning, constructing arguments, and identifying logical fallacies. It is a team-taught course specifically designed to improve writing, thinking, and oral presentation skills that are applicable to all areas of academic study and relevant to working life. The second course would be the multidisciplinary Core Curriculum “Big Questions” course which enages all freshmen in challenging ethical, theoretical, and operational debates across annual themes. Opportunities will also be given to teach electives under the ‘Culture of the Modern World’ basket of the Core Curriculum, as appropriate.

The position requires a doctorate in Philosophy, Political Theory, or cognate discipline, and teaching experience by the date of appointment. We particularly seek candidates with a strong teaching ethic and demonstrable excellence in teaching, and a clear commitment to interdisciplinary education.

Singapore Management University is a research university committed to a multidisciplinary and integrated curriculum. Salary and benefits, such as a housing allowance, and research support, are highly competitive. The teaching load is eight (8) classes per academic year for the Lecturer position.

Full evaluation of applications will start in July 2023 and campus interviews will begin in August 2023. This position will remain open until filled. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

Interested candidates should submit an application package in electronic form (Word or PDF file) and include a cover letter indicating the position applied for, an up-to-date curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness (such as teaching evaluations), and a 1-2 page teaching statement.
