Job description

The faculty of the Philosophy Department at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track position at the rank of Instructor to begin January 1, 2024. The position is a 9-month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.

The successful candidate will teach four courses per semester (fall and spring), usually with only one or two preps per semester. The successful candidate will mainly teach Communicating Moral Issues and may be asked to teach other courses in applied ethics (such as Medical Ethics) as the need arises. There may be opportunities to develop new courses in these areas. Communicating Moral Issues satisfies University requirements for both VESR (values, ethics, and social responsibility) and speech. Consequently, this course has a strong speech component, with all students required to deliver speeches on moral issues.

The candidate may occasionally be assigned teaching assistants. Instructors will have the opportunity to be considered for promotion to Senior Instructor after a probationary period. The Department of Philosophy is an exciting place to teach and study philosophy. The department offers a BA, MA, and PhD degrees, and a concentration in Society, Ethics, and the Law. The department has an active philosophy club for undergraduates, regularly hosts conferences, convenes a colloquium series (6-10 talks per year) and hosts a variety of visiting speakers.
