Job description

About the role. UCL is looking to make a permanent appointment in political philosophy.

The appointment will be at Lecturer level (£50,084–£58,895) or Associate Professor level (£63,921–£69,414; both figures include London Allowance).

The role’s duties will be equally split between the Department of Philosophy and the Department of European & International Social & Political Studies (EISPS).

The successful candidate will teach up to four full modules each academic year.

About you. You will hold a PhD in philosophy, with clear evidence of specialism in political philosophy. You will demonstrate evidence of excellence in philosophical research. You will have experience of teaching, supervision and administration in a higher education setting.

As London’s Global University, we are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates whose backgrounds are typically underrepresented in philosophy.

About us. UCL's Department of Philosophy is one of the leading departments in the UK. In the 2021 REF, 60% of our overall profile received the top grade (4*), the highest of any UK philosophy department. We offer several undergraduate degree programmes, a taught master’s, and prestigious research master’s and PhD programmes.

The Department of EISPS runs three four-year interdepartmental, multidisciplinary undergraduate programmes and admits a number of exchange students annually. Its programmes combine specialisation in one of nine humanities and social sciences, with a broad base in history, law, politics and philosophy, fluency in a foreign language, and a year spent at a university abroad.
