Job description

About the role. UCL is looking to make a permanent appointment in any area where philosophy meets computer science.

The appointment will be at Lecturer level (£50,084–£58,895) or Associate Professor level (£63,921–£69,414; both figures include London Allowance).

The successful candidate will teach up to four full modules each academic year, which may be at graduate or undergraduate level. They will be particularly involved in teaching associated with our new BA programme in Philosophy & Computer Science.

About you. You will hold a PhD in philosophy or computer science, specialising in some area where philosophy meets computer science. You will demonstrate evidence of excellence in philosophical research and experience of teaching, supervision and administration in a higher education setting.

As London’s Global University, we are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates whose backgrounds are typically underrepresented at the interface of philosophy and computer science.

About us. UCL's Department of Philosophy is one of the leading departments in the UK. In the 2021 REF, 60% of our overall profile received the top grade (4*), the highest of any UK philosophy department.

From September 2025, we will have a new BA programme in Philosophy & Computer Science. The degree will be run equally across the departments of Philosophy and Computer Science. The course content will have a significant focus on logic – broadly construed – but will also give students the option to engage with certain normative issues.

Further details can be found on the application website.
