Organization based in Orlando, Florida, United States
|Start date||October 1, 2023|
During the first half of the 19th Century, a Lyceum Movement occurred across the United States, creating approximately 5000 Lyceums from coast to coast. Lyceum-Gardens intends to restart this movement by providing guidance and instructions to those wishing to sit down and discuss the world in reasoned and polite ways. We have conducted over 100 discussions outside our new gardens to very high praise.
The constant comment from those discussions was there is no other opportunity for people to meet and have philosophical discussions as we held in Washington, DC. Based on this, we are developing a garden and philosophical guide and will take other steps to advocate for and assist with developing Lyceums of intelligent discussion spaces. Our premise is that everyone is a philosopher, and we only need a receptive forum for people to express themselves away from the satellite-type one-way broadcasts of our digital world. Our discussions provide feedback and questions in real-time instead of the anonymous environment of bits and bites.
This is the start of this organization with very grand expansion plans. For now, we are nascent, unorganized, and unprofessional, all of which we seek help to cure.
We seek advice, consultation, and editing of our plans and the development of a book and associated publications, events, and speaking engagements intended to restart this as a trend. The American people craved philosophy in the first half of the 19th Century and now need it more than ever two centuries later.
Our initial guidelines are from ARISTOTLE, holding Plato as an example and practice. Our approach will draw on pragmatism, Buddhism, and anything we deem to help our audience. We intend to be a school but will not award certificates like the current education system. The rewards our members seek are profit and income based on the quality of how they continue to spread philosophy. We have methods we will implement toward that end.
You may think you have heard of something like this, but I claim you have not, and please prove me wrong. I do not seek compliments; I know this is a good idea; I seek useful criticism, astute observations, and expected philosopher skills similar to those of yesteryear.
