Job description

The Philosophy Department at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Modern Philosophy. The AOC is open, but the position requires teaching a yearly philosophy of science course that serves the data analytics major. Candidates with additional teaching competence in non-Western or Indigenous American philosophy are especially encouraged to apply. The department expects the successful candidate to be a committed, collaborative, and imaginative scholar with a Ph.D. in hand by September 2024. The teaching load is 5 courses per year, with an opportunity for pre-tenure sabbatical.

Dickinson College and the Philosophy Department value excellence in teaching and scholarship, and we believe in fostering an academic environment that is welcoming for faculty, students, and staff with a wide range of identities and backgrounds. The ability to create inclusive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body will be an important characteristic of the successful candidate. Applicants may choose to include in cover letters and/or teaching statements a brief discussion of how their scholarship and/or teaching would contribute to an inclusive academic environment.

Dickinson College is a highly selective four-year, independent liberal arts college with 2,300 students. Faculty and students at Dickinson frequently interact both in and out of the classroom. Good fit candidates will enjoy such interactions.

Carlisle, PA has a population around 20,000; in recent years, it has repeatedly been voted among the best small towns in the US, best historic towns, and ‘most livable’ (?) small towns. Traveling by car, it is 20 minutes from Harrisburg, PA, two hours from Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, and three hours from New York City. Students, faculty, and staff often enjoy the food, art, entertainment, and cultural enrichment of these major hubs.

Dickinson College is committed to building a representative and diverse faculty, administrative staff, and student body. We strive to foster an inclusive community where members from all backgrounds can live, learn, and thrive together. Accordingly, we encourage applications from all qualified persons. Interested candidates should apply for this position electronically via QUEST (online application system) at https://jobs.dickinson.edu. Applications should include a cover letter, writing sample, CV, three letters of recommendation, a teaching statement, and sample syllabi. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2023. We will conduct a first round of interviews in January 2024 via Zoom or Skype.

Please note: this position is pending budgetary approval. We expect to know whether it has been approved in October 2023. When we know, we’ll update the ad or remove it.
