Job description

The Department of Philosophy in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy to start in August 2024. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.

Our department offers Philosophy degrees at the BA, MA, and PhD levels. Job responsibilities include teaching four courses per academic year (typically one lower-level course and one upper-level course per semester), carrying out an active research program that results in publications, serving on committees for and supervising MA theses and PhD dissertations, contributing to curriculum development and oversight at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, participating in departmental decision-making, and performing other departmental, college, and university service. The successful applicant must also be able to regularly teach an upper-level Ancient Greek philosophy survey course that is required for our majors and MA students.

The Department of Philosophy pursues excellence in teaching and research. It offers a broad range of courses for undergraduate and graduate students, providing them with the skills to flourish in various careers and enabling them to gain admission to competitive graduate and professional programs. Department strengths include philosophy of mind, epistemology, and philosophy of religion. Courses cover several major periods in the history of western philosophy and the major subfields in contemporary philosophy. With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate:

  • A Ph.D., or terminal degree, in Philosophy or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education will be conferred by the date of initial appointment

  • Ability to regularly teach an upper-level Ancient Greek philosophy survey course that is required for our majors and MA students


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of potential for excellence in research in philosophy

  • Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching philosophy

  • Evidence of potential to develop effective undergraduate and graduate classes that complement the current course catalog
