Assistant Professor (EXPIRED)

INTRODUCTION

The Philosophy Department of the University of Connecticut (UConn) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Storrs campus. Area of specialization: Philosophical Logic with preferred additional areas of specialization in Formal Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Psychology, Cognitive Science, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mathematics, or Philosophy of Language. Competence in the History of Philosophy in one or more of these areas is desirable.

The ideal candidate will contribute to UConn’s Logic Group and ECOM (Expression, Communication, and the Origins of Meaning). The candidate will also have an opportunity to collaborate with UConn’s vibrant collective of centers, departments, institutes, and programs with which the Philosophy Department has strong relationships. They include the Institute for Brain and Cognitive (IBACS). Additional research groups include The Vice Squad (focusing on social ethics and virtue theory) and Philosophy and Global Affairs. This constellation of research groups is part of the Philosophy Department’s aim of building a new kind of department addressing 21st-century problems and dedicated to human dignity and planetary well-being.

Founded in 1881, UConn is a Land Grant and Sea Grant institution and member of the Space Grant Consortium. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

• Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in philosophy or a closely related discipline with philosophical training by August 2023.
• Ability to foster and support diversity, inclusion, and equity through academic and research programs.
• Strong research focus on philosophical logic and evidence of research productivity.
• Demonstrated commitment to effective and inclusive undergraduate teaching and the ability to teach graduate seminars and advise qualifying examinations and dissertations in a Ph.D. program.
• Ability to contribute substantially through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the Philosophy Department, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the University.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

• An additional area of specialization in Formal Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Psychology, Cognitive Science, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Mathematics, or Philosophy of Language.
• Competence in the History of Philosophical Logic or in one or more of the listed areas of additional specialization
• Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary work. 
• A strong teaching focus in one or more of the preferred additional Areas of Specialization above.
• Demonstrated commitment to effective and inclusive teaching in a diverse student community.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2024. The teaching load is 2 courses per semester or a total of 4 courses each academic year. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
