Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Africana Studies

Connecticut College

Connecticut College invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) with joint appointments in Philosophy and Africana/ Black Studies with a start date of July 1, 2024. We seek a scholar with expertise in Africana Philosophy. We are open to a variety of areas of competence, with current teaching needs in: Ancient Philosophy; Metaphysics; Philosophy of Mind; Continental Philosophy; Philosophy of Art; Philosophy of Technology.

The tenure-home for this joint appointment will be Philosophy with the normal teaching load being five coursesdivided as three courses per year in Philosophy and two courses per year in Africana Studies, which may be cross-listed with Philosophy. (The first year will only be four courses.) The successful candidate will be expected to teach, on a rotating basis, an interdisciplinary introduction to Africana Studies as well as an upper-level core course in Africana Studies. The College offers pre-tenured faculty a supplementary research fund and a semester’s sabbatical at full salary after a successful third-year review. (For additional information on faculty resources, see http://www.conncoll.edu/employment/faculty-resources/).

In the spirit of the College’s mission of putting the liberal arts into action, the Philosophy Department offers a diverse curriculum covering areas of philosophy that have historically been core to the discipline, as well as courses in areas that connect philosophy with other disciplines. With a thriving philosophy major, the Department encourages student/faculty research and has a strong tradition of supporting student honors theses. The department also has a flexible major curriculum and welcomes new ideas for first-year seminars, interdisciplinary courses, and advanced seminars for majors and minors. The College’s Academic Centers also provide opportunities for involvement beyond the home department and program.

The Africana Studies program was founded at Connecticut College in 1986. Africana Studies represents a tradition of intellectual inquiry born from the Black freedom struggle and is thus fundamentally concerned with issues of slavery, colonialism, racism, and shifting notions of Blackness. It is a dynamic field at Connecticut College that employs an interdisciplinary and transnational approach to cultural production & expression, historical investigation, and social & structural analysis in order to examine and understand the universal and particular experiences of Black people in Africa and throughout the African diaspora. The search in Philosophy and Africana Studies is one of two joint searches with Africana Studies this academic year with the other search in Education and Africana Studies. The faculty hired in these positions will participate in the growth and development of the Africana Studies program at Connecticut College.

Connecticut College is a private, highly selective liberal arts institution with a demonstrated commitment to outstanding faculty teaching and research. We recognize that intellectual vitality and diversity are inseparable. The College seeks creative scholars excited about working in a liberal arts setting with a strong focus on engaged teaching, shared governance, and the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion. AA/EOE.

Candidates with a PhD in Philosophy in hand by July 1, 2024 are preferred, but we will consider applications from candidates who expect to complete their PhD by December 31, 2024.
