Howard University Department of Philosophy The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) invites applications for tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a start date of August 16, 2024. The AOS and AOC for this position are open. We seek outstanding applicants with a demonstrated track record of excellence in research and teaching. Successful candidates are expected to develop vigorous, extramurally funded research programs in their areas of expertise, actively participate in the Department's teaching and curriculum development at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Evidence of interest and success in mentoring underrepresented students is highly desired. We are a pluralistic department with a concentration of faculty conducting research in African, African American, and Afro-Caribbean philosophy and bio-ethics. Howard University is home to the only standalone department of philosophy at an Historically Black College or University. The department focuses on excellence in undergraduate instruction and services BA programs in philosophy and bioethics as well as the BA/JD 3+3 program in addition to contributing to the curriculum of programs throughout the college of Arts and sciences. Our department is unique in offering both breadth and depth of study in Africana Philosophy at the undergraduate level. Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students. Howard University is currently classified as an R2 research university with aspirations and actions underway to achieve R1 status within the next few years. It is a residential campus of approximately 10,000 students located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC. The Department of Philosophy currently consists of seven tenured faculty members, conducting pure and applied research with specializations in Africana Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Philosophy of Law, and Pragmatism. Required Qualifications:
