Job description

This position is based at the Moral Philosophy Group at the University of Vienna, led by Prof. Paulina Sliwa.

We work on a broad range of questions in moral and political philosophy, including in metaethics, moral epistemology, moral psychology, feminist philosophy, moral responsibility and virtue.

We offer a vibrant and exciting research community, with workshops, reading groups, and talks. The Moral Philosophy Group is part of the Institute of Philosophy, which is one of the largest philosophy departments in the German speaking world and provides an outstanding and international research environment. We are also involved in the FWF-funded Cluster of Excellence “Knowledge in Crisis”. This is a cooperation between the Central European University and the Universities of Vienna, Graz, and Salzburg, exploring questions about the nature, transmission, and ethics and politics of knowledge.

The contract is for 3 years and renewable for another 3 years (6 years in total). 

We expect you to participate actively in research, teaching and administration. This involves the following:
•    You produce excellent research in moral/political philosophy.
•    You take part in and help organising reading groups/workshops/visiting talks in moral/political philosophy.
•    You publish in peer-reviewed journals and give talks and research presentations.
•    You apply for projects and raise third-party funds.
•    You prepare and complete a publication-ready habilitation.
•    You teach courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. (2 courses/semester)
•    You supervise students working in moral and political philosophy.
•    You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance.
•    You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.

Required:
•     PhD in moral/political philosophy (the Phd should have been submitted by the application deadline and must be completed by 1. December 2023)
•   MA-degree in Philosophy
•   Track-record of publication in peer-reviewed journals (commensurate with career stage)
•   Teaching experience
•   Excellent knowledge of English (C1)
•   Organisational skills and willingness  to organise events, including reading groups, talks, workshops
•  Ability to work in a team

Desirable:
•    Willingness to contribute to the research and activities of the Cluster of Excellence “Knowledge in Crisis” is an advantage.
•    Note that many courses at the University of Vienna are taught in English, so knowledge of German is not required.
