The Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia (IKGA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

Doctoral Fellowship in Chinese Buddhist Philosophy (f/m/x)

(part-time, 30h per week)

in the European Research Council project “The Ethics of Empty Beliefs: Chinese Buddhist Philosophy in the ‘Period of Disunity’” (CHINBUDDHPHIL) (ERC-2022-StG-101077136).

The successful candidate will contribute to the project, principally by conducting research on the philosophy of the Sanlun 三論 school of Chinese Buddhism.

 

Your profile:

  • Master degree in the field of Buddhist studies, Chinese studies, or a related field (by the start date)
  • Excellent knowledge of Classical (and ideally Modern) Chinese
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Ability and willingness to acquire very good knowledge of written and spoken German
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Chinese Buddhist thought during the period under study
  • Ideally, demonstrated familiarity with Sanlun Buddhist thought, including in relation to Indian Madhyamaka, other schools of Chinese Buddhism, and/or philosophy broadly speaking

 

Your tasks:

  • Enroll as a PhD student at the University of Vienna. Applicants are advised to familiarize themselves with the enrollment procedures at the University as well as eventual course and language requirements. Candidates already enrolled at another university may be considered provided that employment criteria of the Academy can be fulfilled
  • Conduct research as (part of) your doctoral dissertation
  • Present research results at workshops and international conferences, and publish your work

 

We offer:                                                                                              

  • A part-time position at 75% for a period of three years (starting September 01st, 2024 or soon thereafter)
  • An annual gross salary of € 34.606,85 according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences
