Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion, Tenure-Track Salary $54,500.00 Annually Location Westerville, OH Job Type Faculty Job Number 00258 Division Academic Affairs Department Religion & Philosophy Opening Date 10/25/2023 Closing Date 12/1/2023 11:59 PM Eastern DESCRIPTION The Department of Philosophy and Religion at Otterbein University, a comprehensive liberal arts institution, is seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2024. We invite applications from teacher-scholars in philosophy, the academic study of religion, and interdisciplinary methodologies with interests in decolonizing approaches to the study of philosophy and religion (including Africana, Indigenous, Islamic, East Asian, and Postcolonial Studies or other fields) that would complement and enhance but not duplicate the existing strengths of the department. We seek applicants with the ability to teach courses in ethics and courses in the study of global Christianities broadly conceived, and contribute to our general education program, Integrative Studies. Opportunities exist for developing new courses in the major, and in interdisciplinary programs. We welcome applicants from groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Teaching load is 4-3, with departmental and university service obligations. There is a one-course reduction for each of the first two years in exchange for participation in a faculty mentoring program. Candidates should be committed to increasing the diversity of our curriculum and student body. We seek candidates with evidence of excellence in teaching undergraduates, scholarship, and a commitment to recruiting and retaining majors and minors in our department with the ability to excite students about the study of philosophy and Religion. QUALIFICATIONS PhD in hand by start date of August 15, 2024. Evidence of success teaching undergraduates. Area of expertise open, but candidates need to have the ability to teach courses both in philosophical ethics and in global Christianities, and the ability to maintain a research agenda at a teaching-focused institution. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION COMPENSATION: For the rank of Assistant Professor - $54,500 (plus full University benefits). DEPARTMENT: Philosophy and Religion is an interdisciplinary department that is currently composed of one philosopher and one scholar of religious studies. The new assistant professor position would bring together the two fields, offering classes in both philosophy and religious studies. The Department services one major in Philosophy and Religion and two minors (one in Religion, and one in Philosophy). The bulk of our teaching is to general education students (through the Integrative Studies Program) but we also are connected to the Legal Studies Minor, the Sustainability Studies Major, the Art and Art History Major, the Honors Program, and the minor in Race and Ethnic Studies. OTTERBEIN UNIVERSITY: Historically progressive. That is the hallmark of Otterbein University and those connected to this private university nestled in the picturesque, historic Uptown Westerville district in central Ohio and minutes away from Columbus, Ohio’s largest city. Otterbein has set the pace by providing an educational experience that is progressive, innovative, and inclusive. Students come from towns throughout Ohio, as well as many states and multiple countries, enriching the campus through their individual and collective diversity. Otterbein is the first university in Ohio to be selected by the American Association of Colleges and Universities to host a Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Campus Center. Otterbein will work with its own campus community as well as the Columbus City and Westerville City school districts to create positive narrative change about race; promote racial healing activities; and erase structural barriers to equity and opportunity. APPLICATION: Submit letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, evidence of success teaching undergraduates, three references, and a diversity statement consisting of no more than one single-spaced page, addressing the following two questions: How has a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion informed your teaching, scholarship, and/or professional experience to date? How do you see yourself contributing to Otterbein’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion? For full consideration, applications should be received by December 1, 2023. Semi-finalists for the position will be required to submit an official transcript for their highest degree earned. A writing sample will be solicited for those applicants invited for on-campus interviews. Otterbein considers diversity and inclusion as integral parts of the University’s achievement of excellence.
