Job description |
The Department of Philosophy wishes to appoint a Lecturer with expertise in History of Philosophy and/or non-Western Philosophy, including but not limited to Chinese Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, African Philosophy and Arabic and Islamic Philosophy. This position shall be full time and open-ended. This is an ideal opportunity for a scholar with outstanding research potential and excellent teaching ability to join one of the leading philosophy departments in the United Kingdom. The post-holder will have a PhD in Philosophy or a related subject area, proven teaching ability and administrative skills. The postholder will contribute to the department’s outstanding research profile through the production of high-quality research and their specialist research area can be in any of the above specified areas of Philosophy. The role will involve designing and delivering modules at undergraduate level (especially in the History of Philosophy and/or traditions which expand the philosophical canon), contributing to postgraduate teaching (modules and supervision) on our MA programmes, and supervising at PhD level (as appropriate). The successful applicant will also contribute to the Department’s presence across the University, in particular the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and, through outreach and knowledge exchange activities, in the local community and beyond. The Department of Philosophy currently consists of 20 members of staff, across an unusually broad range of areas and we have a thriving research culture. Each year the department hosts a wide range of conferences, workshops, reading groups and seminars and engages in a variety of funded research and knowledge exchange projects. We are also home to the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Science, the Centre for Engaged Philosophy and (alongside York and Leeds) the White Rose Centre for the History of Philosophy. We have a large and vibrant postgraduate community. And our operations are underpinned by a team of 9 administrative staff within the department. We offer BAs in single honours Philosophy; Philosophy, Religion and Ethics; Politics Philosophy and Economics (PPE); and eight dual honours degrees. We have an MA in Philosophy and interdisciplinary MAs in Political Theory (run with the Politics Department) and in Cognitive Studies. In addition, we have home and international PhD students across a wide range of areas of the subject and with a range of different funding sources. We strive for an inclusive and just department, where staff and students are all valued. There are a number of department based, and university-wide initiatives to support equality, diversity and inclusion. This includes a departmental committee, with representatives from academic, professional, postgraduate and undergraduate students working together. Our work aims to raise awareness, advance inclusion, address issues and share good practice. |
