Purpose:

The School of Engineering at Santa Clara University invites applicants for a full-time 3-year Renewable Term Lecturer (RTL) position beginning the 2024-2025 academic year. The position's main focus is to teach “Culture Tech and the Common Good”, a 2-course sequence (ENGR-11a/12a) over two quarters, as well as sections of “Ethics in Technology” (ENGR-19) and “Values and Technology” (ENGR 16), as needed.

Salary: $92,139 - $102,420, Depending on experience, education and qualifications; benefits eligible.

Basic Qualifications:

At the time of appointment, the candidate should have an earned Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Ethics with a concentration or competency towards engineering or technology, or related equivalence in the Sociology or History of technology, or a related field. Candidate should have demonstrated evidence of effective university-level teaching, showing evidence of excellence in teaching courses engendering student interest and excitement through engaging pedagogical techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

An understanding of the Santa Clara teaching scholars model and the Jesuit model of formation. A demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level. Knowledge and experience researching and/or teaching the interconnection between culture and technology and the ability to connect that interplay to the ethical responsibilities of an engineer. Additionally, the ideal candidate will also have knowledge in and around how religious values may inform technical design.

Responsibilities:

Teaching duties include but are not limited to:

A. Teach the “Culture Tech and the Common Good” course sequence and/or the “Ethics in Technology” and “Values and Technology” courses

B. Teach a total of seven course equivalents in every academic year

C. Conduct all assigned class meetings and assign and grade class assignments and exams

D. Hold weekly office hours on campus and be available to students

E. Assign and submit student grades to the registrar by the designated deadline

F. Conduct course assessments as required by the department

G. Act as Academic Adviser to general engineering students and potentially undeclared engineering students or other first-year student

H. Fulfill other instructional, academic, or service activities (e.g., department meetings, committee service, and participation in special events such as Preview Day, Open House, senior project presentations, and department/school events).
