Job description

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY (VWU) invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy, beginning in Fall 2024. A minimum of a Ph.D. in Philosophy with emphasis in Ethics, Applied Ethics and evidence of teaching success is required.

We believe that the study of philosophy is an integral part of a liberal arts education.  We seek a candidate with a strong core commitment to undergraduate teaching and student advising, as well as a passion for service, research, and general scholarship consistent with our student-focused department and University. The successful candidate will support the Philosophy major/minor and also the University’s General Education program. Candidates who can demonstrate experience and enthusiasm for teaching Ethics and Health Care, and Environmental Ethics are highly desirable.

The teaching load is three four-credit courses per semester. The position requires teaching Ethics and Applied Ethics courses.  The position will also support core history of philosophy courses, such as Ancient Philosophy or Modern Philosophy as well as upper-level philosophy electives.

The salary is competitive and an attractive benefits package is offered. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. Applicants should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, transcripts (unofficial are acceptable at this point), and three letters of reference as PDF attachments to the Virginia Wesleyan University Career Site and follow the instructions to submit an application. All materials other than the letters of reference should be submitted as a single pdf. To send your letters of reference and assistance with the Career site please contact Sarah Bowdoin at [email protected]. Review of applications will begin November 10, 2023, and continue until the position is filled. Questions prior to application may be directed to Dr. Lawrence Hultgren, Department Chair, via (757) 455-3229 or [email protected].
