Lecturer, Philosophy of Mind (EXPIRED)

The ANU School of Philosophy is seeking to further enhance its world-class reputation by making a full-time continuing appointment in philosophy of mind, broadly construed to include philosophy of psychology, philosophy of cognitive science, and philosophy of neuroscience. The appointee will be expected to make a significant contribution to the research activities of the School, to convene one undergraduate course per year, and to contribute to the new Bachelor of Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Psychology. 

Classification/Academic Level:  Academic Level B (Lecturer)

Salary package: $103,841 AUD per annum plus 17% superannuation.

Commencement: Flexible

Area of Specialisation: philosophy of mind broadly construed. That is, a successful candidate might have expertise in philosophy of psychology, philosophy of cognitive science, or philosophy of neuroscience.

Position overview: The School is looking to appoint an outstanding scholar whose research will complement the School’s existing strengths and will contribute to the new Bachelor of Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Psychology. The appointee will be expected to carry out world-leading research resulting in regular publications in leading journals, contribute to the teaching programme by convening one undergraduate course per year, supervise graduate students, apply for external grants, and be available for service roles as appropriate. In addition, each appointee can expect extensive tutorial (TA) support, generous travel and research funding, active mentoring (especially in the case of junior appointments), and significant opportunities to bring international visitors to Australia for workshops and our annual “visitor season.” 

The position will be appointed at Level B (roughly equivalent to the rank of Assistant Professor in North America), and will be in philosophy of mind, broadly construed to include philosophy of psychology, philosophy of cognitive science, and philosophy of neuroscience.  

The School of Philosophy is a world-leading department that combines several of the world's most cited living philosophers with dynamic mid-career researchers, and award-winning early career researchers. Our principal strengths are in moral and political philosophy, philosophy of science (especially philosophy of biology, probability, and decision theory), and philosophy of mind.
