Job description

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a start date of August 2024. The holder of this position will be a core faculty member in our growing interdisciplinary undergraduate program in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law (PPEL), and is expected to have research and teaching interests at the intersection of philosophy, politics, and law.

Essential Functions

The primary responsibilities of this position are to: i) teach core undergraduate courses in PPEL, viz., the gateway course (PPEL 2240), methods (PPEL 3100), and history of political economy (PPEL 3000); ii) teach graduate seminars and advise graduate students;; iii) develop and maintain a productive research program that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters in edited volumes, or scholarly books; and iv) provide service to the department, college, or university, or profession.

Minimum Qualifications

i) a doctoral degree in Philosophy, AOS: Political Philosophy and PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics); AOC: Moral Philosophy, or in either Political Science or Economics provided that the applicant has (i) the requisite background in political philosophy and (ii) research interest at the intersection of the disciplines, as demonstrated by published or submitted research in or two graduate courses taken in Political Philosophy or PPE. ABDs are eligible to apply but must complete the requirements for the doctoral degree prior to beginning of employment (August 2024);

ii) expertise in at least one area of the methods of PPE, as demonstrated by having taken at least two graduate courses, teaching experience in at least one course, or dissertation or other research in those areas;
iii) evidence of active research in an area of PPE, demonstrated by at least one published paper on political philosophy or PPEL in a peer-reviewed journal.

iv) capacity to teach PPE courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as demonstrated by research or graduate course work in PPE or experience teaching PPE.
v) capacity to teach political philosophy at the graduate level, as demonstrated by research or graduate course work in political philosophy or experience teaching political philosophy at the graduate level.

Preferred Qualifications
1) Experience as instructor of record for a PPEL or political philosophy course.
2) Evidence of teaching effectiveness as demonstrated by peer-evaluations, student teaching evaluations, or teaching awards.
