Job description

The Opportunity
The Department of Philosophy (which houses programs in Humanities, Philosophy, and Religious Studies) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) seeks to hire a tenure-earning assistant professor with specialization in one of the following three disciplines: Humanities, Philosophy, or Religious Studies, and competence in either of the remaining two disciplines. This is a 9-month position with the possibility of optional summer teaching. The position is expected to begin August 8, 2024.

 Preference will be given to those with one or more research specializations in South Asian Humanities, Religious Studies or Philosophy; African Diaspora; Multi-ethnic Humanities, Religious Studies or Philosophy; Jewish Studies; Philosophy of Law; Epistemology; Social and Political Philosophy; History of Philosophy (any period from 16th century to contemporary; and Feminist Philosophy.

 The faculty member will teach on a 3/2 or 2/3 schedule during the academic year while tenure-earning, and then 3/3 if successful in earning promotion and tenure. Summer teaching may be available. Candidates should be aware of the expectation of sustained research and teaching excellence throughout their career. The position includes usual service activity.

 The successful candidate will join the Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Humanities. The department includes degree programs in Philosophy, Humanities & Cultural Studies, and Religion & Cultural Studies, and graduate certificate programs in Cognitive Sciences and Theoretical and Applied Ethics.

 Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have an awarded Ph.D. in Humanities, Philosophy, Religious Studies, or a closely related area from an accredited institution by June 3, 2024. The successful candidate must also have one year (or its equivalent) of college or university-level teaching experience appropriate to time before, during, or since degree conferral.

 Preferred Qualifications:

Specialization in one of the following three disciplines: Humanities, Philosophy, or Religious Studies, and competence in either of the remaining two disciplines.

 Preferred qualifications also include those with one or more research specializations in the following:

  • South Asian Humanities, Religious Studies, or Philosophy,

  • African Diaspora,

  • Multi-ethnic Humanities, Religious Studies, or Philosophy,

  • Jewish Studies,

  • Philosophy of Law,

  • Epistemology,

  • Social and Political Philosophy,

  • History of Philosophy (any period from 16th century to contemporary), and

  • Feminist Philosophy.

 Additionally, preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated record of publication or grant experience, appropriate to time before, during, or since degree conferral.

In addition, for those who do not have a degree in humanities, philosophy, or religious studies, explain briefly the manner in which your degree is relevant to this position. Do you have at least 1 year (or its equivalent) of full-time university-level teaching experience? (“Equivalent” means teaching at one or more colleges or universities constituting a teaching load of at least 4 classes taught in one academic year. For example, an adjunct working at two different institutions teaching 2 classes in a spring term and 2 in the following summer term will have satisfied the full-time equivalency with a 2/2 load.) Specify here the courses and classes taught in two contiguous semesters, at which institution(s), and at what level.
