Job description |
The Department of Philosophy is seeking to appoint a Professor in Philosophy with expertise in either History of Philosophy or Political Philosophy. Within Political Philosophy, we would particularly like to make an appointment that reinforces existing research strengths of the Department. This opportunity has arisen due to the retirement of Professor Bob Stern and it is an ideal opportunity for a scholar with a well-established and outstanding research profile, proven teaching ability and evidence of leadership to join one of the leading Philosophy Departments in the United Kingdom. You will have a PhD in Philosophy or a related subject area, contribute to the leadership of the Department, further develop our research profile, design and deliver modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and supervise MA and PhD students. The successful applicant will also contribute to the Department’s presence across the University, in particular its Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and, through outreach and knowledge exchange activities in the local community and beyond. The Department of Philosophy currently consists of 20 members of staff, across an unusually broad range of areas and we have a thriving research culture. Each year the department hosts a wide range of conferences, workshops, reading groups and seminars and engages in a variety of funded research and knowledge exchange projects. We are also home to the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Science, the Centre for Engaged Philosophy and (alongside York and Leeds) the White Rose Centre for the History of Philosophy. We have a large and vibrant postgraduate community. And our operations are underpinned by a team of 9 administrative staff within the department. |
