Job description

MacEwan University is where caring faculty help people connect their passions to their future paths. Located in the heart of Edmonton's diverse and dynamic downtown community, and on the traditional lands of Treaty 6 First Nations and homelands of the Métis people, MacEwan is known for exceptional undergraduate learning. With its dedication to teaching excellence, informed by scholarly research, innovation, and creative activity, MacEwan provides an exceptional collaborative and supportive learning environment with a commitment to human rights, environmental sustainability, and opportunities for community engagement. We are committed to creating an equitable, diverse, inclusive, and welcoming community for all peoples, cultures, and identities.

Our comprehensive undergraduate university offers 59 programs to more than 18,000 full- and part-time students in business, communications, community and human services, design, fine and performing arts, health, humanities, natural science, nursing, public safety, and social science. Through a wide array of experiential learning opportunities, and strategic relationships in the community, we partner with others to produce graduates of stature. Along with a robust grounding in their chosen disciplines, MacEwan students are given durable life skills that prepare them to take on the world.

The Department of Humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Science at MacEwan University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the History and Philosophy of Science, commencing on July 1, 2024, and subject to final budgetary approval.

Philosophy at MacEwan University emphasizes a grounding in the history of philosophy and a close reading of primary texts. The successful candidate should have a specialization in the History and Philosophy of Science, although candidates with a specialization in the Philosophy of Science with a historical focus will also be considered.  In addition to courses on the Philosophy of Science, the successful candidate will be expected to teach courses on Symbolic Logic and Epistemology. The ability to teach a course on the Philosophy of Nature is an asset.

The Department of Humanities is a multidisciplinary department housing programs in Classics, French, History, Philosophy, and Spanish. The Department values collaboration and integration, as evidenced by our great works-based Humanities courses and our emerging interest in digital humanities. Comfort in a multidisciplinary humanist environment and experience making connections between humanist disciplines are assets. Preferred candidates will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant area of expertise and will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching and an ongoing research program.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching dossier (including recent teaching evaluations), statement of research interests, sample of scholarly work, academic transcripts, along with the names and contact information of three professional referees. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Department Chair to provide three (3) letters of reference sent directly from referees.

Questions about this opportunity may be addressed to Dr. Michael Carroll, Chair of the Humanities Department, at [email protected].
