Job description

The Paris Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS) is an emerging University in Austria that stands for excellence in research and teaching in the field of (Digital) Humanities, Life Sciences, sustainability of (social) processes and the connection of Art & Science. With the four guiding themes “Art in Context”, “Development and Sustainability”, “Digital Life”, and “Health and Mind”, PLUS offers scientists excellent opportunities for inter- and transdisciplinary networking.


At the earliest possible date, the PLUS would like to appoint a University Professorship for "Theoretical Philosophy" in the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Social Sciences.


The professor to be appointed will represent theoretical philosophy, especially epistemology, metaphysics, philosophical logic, philosophy of mind, or philosophy of language, in both teaching and research. The recipient of the professorship will be expected to teach in several areas of theoretical philosophy. The research strengths of the applicant should complement those of the other members of the department. A connection to the present focus areas of the university and to the Cluster of Excellence “Knowledge in Crisis” located at the department will be advantageous. Applicants must be able to direct doctoral research and to teach courses in all the department’s programs. These are currently the German-language bachelor’s programs “Philosophy” and “Politics, Philosophy, and Economics”, the German-language teacher training programs “Psychology and Philosophy” and “Ethics”, and the English-language master’s program “Philosophy”. The recipient of the professorship will be expected to contribute to teacher training, curriculum development, and administrative tasks in the department.


General employment requirements are:

  • a completed domestic or equivalent foreign university education (doctorate in philosophy) appropriate to the position;
  • relevant habilitation (venia docendi) or achievements in research and teaching that correspond to those holding a tenured position;
  • a demonstrated capacity for outstanding and internationally visible research;
  • a demonstrated capacity for outstanding teaching;
  • involvement in the international research community (e.g. activity as a reviewer, educationa or teaching experience abroad, organization of conferences, etc.);
  • excellent German and very good English skills, both written and spoken.

Expected in addition:

  • willingness to work cooperatively in teams;
  • leadership and interpersonal skills;
  • resilience;
  • experience in acquiring third-party funding.

The position is offered as a full-time tenured contract, as regulated under the Austrian University Act (UG 2002 §98 Abs.1).
