Job description |
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time, one-year visiting assistant professor position in Philosophy to begin August 2024. This is a non-tenure track appointment, annually renewable for up to two years (for a total of three) contingent upon performance, budget, and continued need. The area of specialization is Applied Ethics; the area of concentration is open. We seek candidates with demonstrated teaching excellence and a strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate education. The teaching load is six courses per year which will include two sections of contemporary moral issues and two sections of bioethics. The candidate should also be prepared to teach Introduction to Philosophy. A Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related field is expected prior to appointment. The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With nearly 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and 92% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is remarkably student-centered, focused on preparing students “to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society.” The University of Richmond is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body, and to modeling an inclusive campus community which values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development, and institutional success. Our academic community strongly encourages applications that are in keeping with this commitment. For more information on the department of Philosophy, please visit the department’s website at http://philosophy.richmond.edu Applicants should apply online at http://jobs.richmond.edu and submit the following materials: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests and goals (1-2 pages), a teaching statement (2-3 pages), and evidence of excellence in teaching. The teaching statement should articulate the candidate’s teaching philosophy, interests, and future professional development goals as well as involvement in and commitment to inclusive pedagogy. Candidates for this position may be asked, at a later date, to provide the names and contact information for three references who will be asked to submit letters of recommendation. One of these references must be able to speak to the candidate’s record of or potential excellence in teaching. Review of applications will commence on March 15, 2024 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position should be addressed to the Chair of the Search Committee, Professor Miriam Schleifer McCormick, [email protected]. |
