Job description |
Western University’s Department of Philosophy seeks to hire a one-year limited term Assistant Professor with a specialization in ethics, feminist philosophy, or political philosophy. We welcome candidates who take historical or contemporary approaches to these areas. We also prefer candidates with teaching competence in two or more of them. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses, conduct research in their area(s) of expertise, and perform some service for the department. We have teaching needs in all three of the areas mentioned above: ethics (esp. normative and applied), feminist philosophy (esp. an introduction to it), and political philosophy (history of or contemporary). Western University has a semester system. The position comes with a 3-3 teaching load, it is also non-renewable, and it has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024. With annual research funding exceeding $220 million, and an international reputation for success, Western ranks as one of Canada’s top research-intensive universities. Our research excellence expands knowledge and drives discovery with real-world application. Western also provides an exceptional employment experience, offering competitive salaries, a wide range of employment opportunities and one of Canada’s most beautiful campuses. Western’s Department of Philosophy is one of the leading philosophy departments in Canada, with a strong reputation in a range of areas including feminist philosophy, applied ethics, philosophy of mind and cognitive science, and general philosophy of science. The Department has close working ties with many other units on campus, such as Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, Health Sciences, Political Science, Psychology, and Computer Science. We are also home to the Centre for Digital Philosophy (http://cdp.uwo.ca), which develops and maintains PhilPapers, PhilJobs, and other services. In 2008, the department founded the Rotman Institute of Philosophy (https://www.rotman.uwo.ca), where philosophers work with scientists to tackle complex social problems. The Department as a whole is deeply committed to the inclusion of underrepresented voices in philosophy. We are dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and decolonization in our discipline, research, and teaching. General information about the Department can be found at https://www.uwo.ca/philosophy/. Questions about the position may be addressed to the Department Chair, Prof. Carolyn McLeod, at [email protected]. The review of applications for this position will begin on April 15, 2024, and will close on June 1, 2024. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy or a related field by September 1, 2024.
