Job description

The School of Life Sciences (SOLS) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-eligible Teaching Assistant Professor position with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2024. Subsequent academic year renewals are contingent upon performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the unit. The successful candidate will teach large enrollment, undergraduate courses, such as History of Biology (BIO 316/HPS 330), History of Medicine (BIO 318/HPS 331), History of Science (HPS 322 and 323), Biology and Society (BIO 311/HPS 340), both in-person and online. They will contribute to curriculum development, supervise and mentor graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate students in research. This person will also serve the school, college, and university in capacities appropriate for the position.

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent advanced degree in History of Science, History and Philosophy of Science, or closely related field by time of appointment.
  • College or university teaching experience in one or more of the following subjects: history of biology, history of medicine, biology and society, history and philosophy of science, or a closely related subject.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the ASU Charter.

Desired qualifications:

  • Two years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience creating courses, including lectures, formative and summative assessments, and classroom activities.
  • Experience teaching asynchronous, online courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the particular needs of students in asynchronous, online courses.
  • Experience teaching large courses that use interactive techniques for engaging students and assessing their learning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in teaching History of Medicine.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in teaching Bioethics.
  • Experience mentoring and supervising teaching assistants.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduates in research projects.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate STEM majors
  • Evidence of successful collaborative activities with other faculty and staff, especially in the biological sciences.
  • Participation in the higher education community and professional development activities (e.g., authoring educational or scientific publications, presenting at conferences, attending workshops, etc.).
