Job description

The Philosophy program at the New School for Social Research offers an important niche for politically-oriented and socially conscious students to pursue rigorous MA and PhD training in the History of Philosophy, Critical Theory, Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy. Accordingly, our graduate curriculum centers on a mix of problem-based and historically oriented courses. Our undergraduate BA program at Eugene Lang College explores the meaning, significance, and history of ideas that have played a central role in shaping the modern world and our relations with one another. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum that offers major, minor, and dual-degree (BA/MA) options, students develop their critical capacities to engage with and question myriad texts and thinkers to address the most pressing social challenges of our time.

We seek an established senior scholar who will contribute to the research profile, pedagogy, and leadership of the Department of Philosophy. Areas of Specialization and Competence are open, but the Department currently has needs in Post-Kantian German philosophy, Critical Theory, Pragmatism, and Ancient Philosophy. The successful candidate will also be eligible to be considered for the Vera List chair in philosophy.

The New School is strongly committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and particularly seeks applications from members of underrepresented groups, as well as candidates who share this commitment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will teach a 2/2 load in our graduate and undergraduate programs, provide mentorship for MA and PhD students, advise undergraduates and contribute to the regular service needs of the department, college, and University.
