Job description |
The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking to make one appointment, at the level of Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2025 (although start date is negotiable). AOS Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence broadly construed to include connections to ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, political philosophy, philosophy of science, or other areas of philosophy. A solid background in artificial intelligence is expected. Significant promise of research excellence is a necessary condition for consideration, as is evidence of significant skills in teaching. The successful applicant will normally teach two courses per semester (graduate and/or undergraduate); will be involved in thesis supervision; and will have other standard non-teaching duties such as departmental service, graduate and undergraduate mentorship, and participation in our department’s vigorous intellectual life. In your application, please include a cover letter, writing sample, CV, and some evidence of strong teaching skills. Also, please arrange for us to receive four letters of recommendation in support of your application. This position is part of a cluster hire at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that also involves positions in the department of computer science and the department of statistics and operations research. Although this position is housed fully in the philosophy department, the ideal candidate will have research and/or teaching interests that make substantive connections with related fields and would be excited to engage in cross-disciplinary conversations and collaborations. We seek applicants who strive to promote access to resources and promote student success in a public university setting where students reflect the socioeconomic, racial, religious, and other diverse characteristics across the state. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or status as a protected veteran. Apply online at https://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/288557 Review of dossiers will begin on October 15, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. Questions regarding the position should be directed to Professor Thomas Hofweber, Search Committee Chair, Department of Philosophy, CB#3125, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599; [email protected]. |
