About the Institute for Governance and Civics The Institute for Governance and Civics was created, in part, to provide students with access to an interdisciplinary hub that will develop academically rigorous scholarship and coursework on the origins of the American system of government, its foundational documents, its subsequent political traditions and evolutions, and its impact on comparative political systems. The IGC works with departments, schools, and colleges on the FSU campus to hire faculty, to fund research, and to create relevant programming. The IGC funds faculty lines. Tenured and tenure-track faculty are subject to the rules and requirements of their tenure-home departments. About the Philosophy Department The Philosophy Department has a strong faculty working in a variety of areas, including logic, ancient and modern philosophy, ethics, social and political philosophy, action theory, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of science. In addition to its Colloquium Series, the department regularly hosts Werkmeister Conferences and Workshops, as well as an annual Free Will Conference and a Minorities and Philosophy Conference. The department publishes Social Theory and Practice, a leading journal in social and political philosophy. About the College of Arts and Sciences The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest and most academically diverse at FSU, encompassing 200-plus major programs of study and approximately 11,000 students. Arts and Sciences faculty and graduate teaching assistants deliver nearly 50 percent of all undergraduate credit hours at FSU annually, both through major coursework and fulfillment of general education requirements. By graduation, nearly every undergrad will have taken at least one course in the college. Across departments and majors, the college’s average student to faculty ratio is a fantastic 22:1, which means students get individualized attention within a large, public-institution environment. College faculty also bring in nearly $65 million in research funding annually. Among the 100,000 Arts and Sciences alumni are nationally known meteorologists, Pulitzer Prize winners, heads of state and governmental leaders, university presidents, educators, pioneering scientists, business owners and more. |
