Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Carleton College invites applications for the two-year Cowling Post-Doctoral Fellowship beginning September 1, 2025. Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, it is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, in easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources.

We seek candidates with potential for high-quality scholarship and a commitment to excellent teaching in a liberal arts setting.  While candidates who have substantially completed their PhD will be considered, a PhD must be completed before the start of employment. The teaching load for this position is 3 courses during one year and two during the other.  Carleton has three ten-week terms.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach a mixture of introductory- and advanced-level courses that should appeal to philosophy majors who are interested in technology, computer science or data science as well as students in other majors who are interested in philosophical approaches to these topics.

To apply:  please visit the Carleton College Web site at go.carleton.edu/carletonjobs and complete the online application, including a cover letter, c.v., a research statement, a writing sample, and a teaching dossier (sample syllabi, a statement about teaching students from diverse backgrounds in a residential liberal arts environment, and student evaluations if available) by December 1, 2024. After submitting your application, you will receive a request for the contact information for three references, including at least one who is able to specifically address teaching experience.

We will conduct interviews via Zoom in early January.

Carleton College is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society.  We are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body. Women and members of minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Carleton College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, disability, or age in providing employment or access to its educational facilities and activities.
