Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE. UCL will make two permanent appointments in history of philosophy. The appointments will be at Lecturer level (£51,474–£60,521) or Associate Professor level (£65,698–£71,357; all figures include London Allowance).

One appointee will have a research specialism in Kant’s theoretical philosophy.

The other appointee will have a research specialism in history of continental philosophy, construed broadly, to include phenomenology, German idealism, existentialism, critical theory, etc.

ABOUT YOU. You will hold a PhD in philosophy, with a research specialism as above, and will demonstrate evidence of excellent philosophical research. You will have experience of teaching and supervision in a higher education setting.

As London’s Global University, we are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates whose backgrounds are underrepresented in philosophy.

ABOUT US. UCL's Department of Philosophy is one of the leading departments in the UK. In the 2021 REF, 60% of our overall profile received the top grade (4*), the highest of any UK philosophy department.

We offer several undergraduate degree programmes. Undergraduate first- and second-year modules largely involve a weekly one-hour lecture plus a one-hour seminar; third-year modules usually consist of a weekly two-hour seminar. We offer a taught master’s programme, and a prestigious research master’s and PhD. Master’s-level modules usually consist of a weekly two-hour seminar.
